The Kano State Government has begun efforts to restore pipe-borne water supply to rural communities in the state.
Water is now being pumped from the Thomas Dam in Kano North to various villages in Minjibir and Makoda local government areas, ending an eight-year water shortage for residents.
During a tour of the affected communities, local residents expressed their appreciation. Abubakar Kilawa, a community member, said,
“We are happy to see our taps running water today after eight years. We thank Governor Yusuf and Commissioner Doguwa for reconnecting our villages with pipe-borne water.”
In a statement, the Kano State Water Resources Commissioner, Umar Doguwa, assured the public of the government’s commitment to addressing the state’s water challenges. “We are determined to end the perennial water issues faced by our people,” Doguwa said.
To further address water supply challenges in Kano, the government has plans to pump 750 million liters of water daily to Kano city and surrounding areas. The government has procured ten new water pumps, which will be installed at the Tmburawa and Challawa water treatment plants.
The initial target is to supply 450 million liters per day, with plans to increase this to 750 million liters in the near future. Governor Abba Yusuf, who is an engineer, personally assessed the water treatment plants and identified faulty water pumps as the main cause of the water shortage.
Six of the new pumps will be installed at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, which previously supplied 50% of Kano’s water needs before being shut down and vandalized. The remaining four pumps will be installed at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant to restore supply to Nasarawa and surrounding areas.
In addition, the Kano State government is planning to expand several water treatment plants, including those in Joda and Wudil, to further meet growing demand.
The commissioner also issued a stern warning to industries, commercial centers, and individuals who divert treated water, particularly for farming purposes.
He stated, “We are investigating those responsible for such practices and will take action, including seizing lands if necessary, to prevent further abuse.”
The restoration of water supply to these rural areas is a significant step toward addressing Kano’s long-standing water issues and improving access to clean water for its residents.
