At least seven individuals were injured and several properties were destroyed in an attack on the Bamyam Theological Seminary in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State on Tuesday morning.
Ibrahim Zuppai, a member of the Global Methodist Church, which owns the seminary, confirmed that the attackers had been driven away by soldiers the previous day but regrouped after the soldiers left. Zuppai reported that the attackers returned the following morning, chased away students, and caused significant damage.
He stated, “Some people were injured, and properties were destroyed. The attackers were driven away by soldiers yesterday but returned this morning. I was informed that about seven pastors were injured, including a pastor and the seminary’s accountant, both of whom were seriously wounded.”
Bishop John Pena of the Global Methodist Church is reportedly en route to the seminary to assess the situation.
Efforts to contact military and police spokespersons for further comment were unsuccessful as both did not respond to calls.
The attack is believed to be related to ongoing tensions between the Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church. The two denominations have been in conflict since the United Methodist Church’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage last year, leading to a split and disputes over control of church assets.
