The Bauchi State Government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, has initiated a comprehensive stakeholder engagement aimed at addressing the persistent challenges of flooding in the state.
The series of meetings, held across the state’s three senatorial zones, focused on developing a sustainable flood disaster management strategy.
The discussions covered four key areas: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, with input from flood-prone communities, relevant state agencies, local government authorities, development partners, and civil society organizations.
The goal is to create a cohesive approach to disaster management that emphasizes prevention, collaboration, and community involvement.
In her opening remarks, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Hajara Yakubu Wanka, acknowledged the severe impact of flooding, particularly in 2024, when Bauchi was the second-most affected state in Nigeria, following Borno.
She highlighted the widespread loss of lives, destruction of property, and the socio-economic challenges faced by flood-affected communities.
“The theme of this engagement, ‘Building Resilience and Collaborative Solutions for Flood-Affected Communities,’ is a call to action for everyone—government agencies, development partners, civil society, and community members—to work together on strategies that are not just reactive but also proactive and preventive,” Wanka said.
The engagement event featured a presentation on the 2024 flood disaster statistics, showing the extent of the damage, followed by testimonies from local government chairmen who shared their experiences and first responses during the floods.
Participants then split into four syndicate groups, each assigned a thematic area to brainstorm solutions, which were later presented to the larger group.
The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Commissioner Wanka, featuring experts from relevant state agencies, development partners, and community leaders.
A communiqué summarizing the outcomes of the engagement will be released by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in the coming days.
This initiative marks a significant step toward building a disaster-resilient Bauchi State, focusing on long-term solutions to mitigate the effects of flooding.
