The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Olufemi Peters, has announced the introduction of a skills acquisition program in the curriculum of the NOUN Staff Nursery and Primary School.
Professor Peters, who was represented by Professor Sammani Rabo Butswat, made the announcement during the 8th Inter-House Sports Competition in Kaduna.
He revealed that the program will offer vocational training in areas such as tailoring, plumbing, and electrical installations.
“We have already seen interest from 189 pupils who are eager to participate in these vocational courses. A small stipend will be introduced in the future, though the program is currently free for this session.
In the next session, we will decide whether parents will contribute to the stipend, and whether the program will run during school sessions or extend to the holidays,” said Professor Peters.
He also outlined plans to expand the program to include computer literacy and establish an electronic library, allowing students to access educational resources globally.
During the event, Professor Aminu Umar, Director of the Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD), spoke on the significance of the competition.
He noted that the annual event aims to showcase the talents of pupils and promote the idea of balancing work with play. He also expressed gratitude for the large turnout of parents supporting their children.
Professor Umar emphasized the importance of vocational skills in the 21st century, alongside traditional education. He called on parents to support the initiative, which aligns with the government’s policy of promoting vocational training from the basic level.
The competition featured a variety of events, including races for nursery and primary school pupils, tug of war for parents and teachers, and a teacher’s race. Winners in each category were awarded medals, certificates, and trophies.
