The Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) in Gombe State, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Danburam, has emphasized the importance of obtaining both birth and death certificates, describing them as equally vital for effective population management and government planning.
Speaking after a sensitization campaign in several Local Government Areas of the state, Alhaji Danburam highlighted that many people neglect to register deaths, focusing instead on birth registration. However, he stressed that both registrations are critical for tracking population trends and ensuring accurate data for government planning.
“We are on an advocacy tour to raise awareness about the importance of both birth and death registration. While birth registration is widely recognized, death registration is equally important. It helps in managing population growth and monitoring public health,” said Danburam.
He explained that data gathered from birth and death registrations are essential for understanding population dynamics, including population increases through births and decreases due to deaths. This information is crucial for planning social services and government interventions.
The NPC has transitioned to digital registration for both births and deaths at over 93 designated centers across the state, with registration services being offered for free, while attestation costs N4,000. Danburam urged citizens to make use of the digital registration system for the benefit of both individuals and the community.
In his remarks, the State Director of the NPC, Mr. Adedeji Rufai Adeniyi, added that the information collected from death registrations is analyzed monthly and annually to track causes of death in different areas, providing valuable insights for health prevention and community planning.
The awareness campaign is supported by the Gombe State Government, which has facilitated the tour with logistical assistance, and has included visits to Local Government Chairmen, Counselors, Emirs, Chiefs, and other community leaders.
