The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has urged the 139 newly inducted nurses not to seek opportunities abroad but to remain in Nigeria, emphasizing the country’s need for their services.
Speaking at the 7th induction and oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, Professor Ishaya congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to approach their careers with diligence and professionalism. He stressed the importance of their roles in the healthcare sector and urged them to be committed to providing quality care.
“You must be able to function both independently and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals,” he said. “Develop and implement effective health promotion strategies to ensure positive health outcomes. Remember, we need your services here in Nigeria.”
Professor Ishaya also reminded the nurses of the responsibility they hold in maintaining patient confidentiality and treating all patients with respect. “No one is above ill-health, so always treat your patients with care and dignity.”
Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, Acting Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, represented by Dr. Ali Adamu, Head of Planning and Research, also encouraged the new nurses to stay committed to their chosen profession. “Pursue further learning and acquire new skills to enhance your competence. Higher education in nursing will open up numerous opportunities both within Nigeria and internationally,” he said.
Dr. Adamu further emphasized the importance of collaboration with other healthcare professionals and learning from senior colleagues. He also commended the University of Jos graduates for their performance during clinical training, highlighting that it would serve as the foundation for their future success in the profession.
In addition, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogunyewo, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, reassured the graduates that they had received thorough training to meet the demands of the nursing profession.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the graduates as they officially entered the nursing field, ready to contribute to the improvement of healthcare in Nigeria.
