Practicing journalists and aspiring media professionals have been encouraged to embrace investigative journalism in their careers due to its pivotal role in promoting good governance and strengthening democracy.
This call was made during the International Conference on Trends in Investigative Journalism in Northern Nigeria, held at the Yusuf Bala Usman Auditorium, North-Eastern University, Gombe.
The conference, organized by WikkiTimes in collaboration with North Eastern University, Gombe, and Tiger Eye Foundation, Ghana, brought together students, lecturers, media executives, legal practitioners, and journalists from across the country to discuss the impact and challenges of investigative reporting.
Professor Umar Pate, a renowned Mass Communication expert and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Kashere, emphasized the importance of the Freedom of Information Act in facilitating investigative journalism.
He urged journalists to leverage the law to access crucial information for in-depth investigations, despite the risks and costs involved.
According to Professor Pate, investigative journalism is essential for holding power to account and promoting transparency.
Ajibola Amzat, co-publisher of WikkiTimes, also spoke at the event, revealing that the outlet is currently facing several lawsuits as a result of its investigative reports.
Despite these challenges, Amzat stressed the importance of thorough investigative reporting in upholding truth and accountability in society.
Anas Aremayau Anas, a renowned undercover journalist from Ghana, delivered the keynote address, stressing the role of investigative journalism in strengthening democracy, the rule of law, and combating corruption.
Themed “Strengthening Investigative Journalism in Northern Nigeria for Social Change: Successes and Challenges,” the conference highlighted the successes and ongoing struggles of investigative journalism in Northern Nigeria, offering a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among media professionals and students.
