The League of Young Professional Progressives in Nigeria (LYPPN) has rejected the recent appointment of Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as the Accountant General of the Federation, calling it a violation of integrity, transparency, and merit.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Coordinator, Munkail Jalaludeen, the group expressed disappointment in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision, claiming Ogunjimi did not emerge as the best candidate in the selection process.
The group noted that Ogunjimi secured a distant third position in a competitive hiring exercise meant to select the most qualified candidate.
The presidency had announced Ogunjimi’s appointment in a statement on March 4, 2024, which emphasized a rigorous, merit-based selection process, including written assessments, an ICT proficiency test, and an oral interview.

It further stressed the administration’s commitment to promoting transparency, excellence, and competence in key public service positions.
However, LYPPN rejected these claims, arguing that the appointment contradicted the administration’s stated values.
The group also pointed to Ogunjimi’s alleged involvement in a N2 billion police payroll fraud, raising concerns over his suitability for the role.
LYPPN also reminded the public of earlier assurances from the Head of Service, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, and the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Eno Olotu, that the selection process would prioritize merit and professionalism.

The group further recalled controversies surrounding Ogunjimi’s name when he was initially considered for the position of Head of Service in December 2023.
It emphasized that Ogunjimi’s appointment undermines the integrity expected of the office of the Accountant General.

In light of these concerns, LYPPN has called on the National Assembly, civil society organizations, and Nigerians at large to urge the president to review the appointment and ensure that the candidate with the highest performance in the selection process is appointed without delay.
