A key hallmark of competent leadership is the ability to make sound decisions and take responsibility for them.
Unfortunately, Governor Fubara of Rivers State appears to be struggling with this crucial aspect of governance, and his indecision is having a noticeable impact on the state’s political landscape.
In any political party, one of the most important steps before an election is for party leaders, often referred to as the caucus, to meet and discuss key issues such as candidate selection, election strategies, and the structure of government in the event of victory.
Governor Fubara’s situation was no different when he was chosen as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.
During pre-election discussions, a series of agreements were made regarding how the party would govern the state if he emerged victorious.
However, soon after his election and subsequent inauguration, the governor seemed to reverse course under the influence of external forces.
One of the key moments in Fubara’s tenure came when he and other Rivers State leaders met with President Bola Tinubu.
An agreement was reached that promised to address the political crisis destabilizing governance in the state.
However, just days after returning from Abuja, the governor was reportedly swayed by various factions, who instigated him against the president.
Fubara later declared that he would “shock” the president and others involved in the agreement, signaling his reversal of position.
Such indecisiveness, which saw Fubara say one thing in the morning and act completely differently by evening, is troubling.
His administration’s instability was further highlighted when, after swearing in caretaker chairmen for local government areas, the governor initially directed them to pay all outstanding salaries to local government officials.
However, just days later, he reversed this directive, instructing that only selected council officials should be paid—an apparent political maneuver to consolidate support among those loyal to him.
This series of contradictory actions demonstrates the consequences of a leader failing to honor his decisions and commitments. Though Fubara has been influenced by various political factions around him, his inability to make firm decisions is undermining the governance of Rivers State.
At the heart of the issue is the question of leadership integrity: a governor who cannot make and stand by his decisions risks further destabilizing his government.
Governor Fubara’s inability to lead with conviction continues to fuel the political uncertainty plaguing Rivers State.
