In a disturbing incident on Sunday, two security personnel—one police officer and one vigilante—were gunned down by unknown assailants at a checkpoint along the Federal University Wukari axis.
The tragic event, which occurred in the early hours, saw the attackers seize the victims’ rifles before fleeing the scene.
The Chairman of Wukari Local Government Council, Dauda Samaila Agbu, confirmed the deaths, stating that security operatives engaged the assailants in a gunfight.
During the exchange, two of the gunmen were neutralized, and a third was apprehended.
The captured suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime, shedding light on the incident’s unfolding.
Agbu further alleged that the attackers originated from Jootar, a community in neighboring Benue State, raising concerns over cross-border criminal activities.
The State Command Police Public Relations Officer, Usman Abdullahi, who also confirmed the incident, stated that investigations are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining suspects.
Abdullahi commended the public for their cooperation in providing valuable intelligence, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in curbing criminal activities.
The incident has sparked heightened security concerns in the region, with local authorities assuring that they are taking all necessary measures to prevent further attacks and maintain peace in the area.
