The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with the Kano State Government and other key stakeholders, recently convened to discuss enhancing school safety under the Safe Schools initiative.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 1 Ahmad Ammani, emphasized that the initiative aims to safeguard students across schools in Kano State from security threats such as banditry and kidnapping. The initiative is part of the national effort to create a safe learning environment.
The theme of the meeting, “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities in the Protection of Education,” focused on ensuring the safety of students in educational institutions.
Egbetokun assured that modern technology and intelligence-led policing will be used to proactively address security concerns around schools.
The key objectives of the Safe Schools initiative include identifying security threats, fostering partnerships between the police, educational institutions, and host communities, and promoting security awareness among students, teachers, and the broader community.
The IG also mentioned plans for training programs for educators, administrators, and security personnel to equip them with skills to handle security challenges effectively.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner of Education, Ali Makoda, reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the Safe Schools initiative.
He highlighted measures already in place, such as the deployment of security personnel, and outlined his administration’s dedication to improving education, including increasing the education budget to 31%.
The National Coordinator of the School Protection Squad Force Headquarters, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Segunle, spoke about the importance of integrating host communities into the security framework.
He noted that the Safe Schools initiative would help children affected by insecurity continue their education unhindered.
Brigadier General Ahmad Muhammed Tukur, Commander of the 3 Brigade Kano, also expressed support for the initiative, pledging the military’s collaboration in ensuring the safety of educational institutions.
The meeting concluded with calls from various stakeholders for all Nigerians to support the Safe Schools initiative, which aims to create a secure and conducive environment for learning across the country.
