The ongoing trial of former Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, and his ex-Finance Commissioner, Ademola Banu, has unveiled new details about the alleged diversion of N5.78 billion meant for education.
A key witness, Dr. Musa Oladimeji Dasuki, a retired Permanent Secretary at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), testified before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
Dasuki revealed that in 2013, the finance commissioner requested the use of the UBEC Matching Grant to settle teachers’ salaries.
Despite initial resistance from SUBEB officials, who warned that the diversion would disrupt critical school infrastructure projects, the funds were eventually moved to the state’s account with Skye Bank following approval from the governor.
The funds were originally intended for the construction of 40 classroom blocks, VIP toilets, and ICT centers across 16 local government areas.
However, Dasuki testified that many of these projects stalled as a result of the diversion. He further disclosed that contractors who had completed their work were not paid, leading to numerous complaints.
In cross-examination, defense counsel Jimoh Mumini, SAN, questioned Dasuki about the involvement of the former governor and finance commissioner in SUBEB’s management.
Dasuki clarified that while they were not part of the management, the loans were approved on behalf of the state government, not for personal gain.
The court adjourned the case to Thursday, March 13, 2025, for further hearing.
