Lawmakers in the Kwara State House of Assembly have urged the state government to enhance collaboration with security agencies and local communities to address the increasing proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the state.
The call came during a plenary session on Wednesday, presided over by Speaker Yakubu Danladi Salihu.
The session focused on the rising use of illegal firearms in crimes such as armed robbery and motorcycle snatching, particularly in rural areas.
Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon (Edu), who moved the motion, emphasized that the easy availability of firearms has fueled criminal activities and heightened insecurity in many communities.
“The presence of illegal weapons has emboldened criminals, making it difficult for law enforcement to effectively tackle these crimes,” Gideon stated.
Several lawmakers, including Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir (Ilorin Central) and Hon. Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu (Owode/Onire), supported the motion, stressing the importance of a coordinated response.
They called on the state government to collaborate with traditional rulers, security agencies, and local vigilante groups to address the menace.
The Assembly resolved to urge Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to take immediate action by:
Establishing a task force composed of security agencies and community leaders to combat illegal arms possession.
Strengthening cooperation with local government chairmen and transport operators to encourage residents to report suspicious activities.
Enforcing stricter penalties for illegal arms possession through the Ministry of Justice.
Launching a multilingual public awareness campaign on the dangers of illegal firearms.
The session also saw the attendance of students from Children’s Affairs Learning Academy and the University of Ilorin, who observed the proceedings from the gallery.
The House later adjourned after a motion moved by Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir and seconded by Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon.
