The HANS Centre for Social Justice and Development has kicked off a three-month mentorship program for over 120 girls across Gombe State, aimed at fostering self-reliance and professionalism.
The program, which is part of the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations, is being held at the Linmana Event Centre in Gombe State.
The initiative brings together a diverse group of female professionals, including doctors, lawyers, engineers, business moguls, entrepreneurs, and senior military and paramilitary officers, who will mentor the girls in various career fields.
The program aims to inspire the girls to pursue professional careers, become innovators, and make positive changes in their communities.
The girls are divided into groups and mentored by role models such as commissioners, local government chairpersons, women activists, academic professors, senior health practitioners, and legal professionals.
These mentors share their experiences through presentations and panel discussions, offering valuable insights into their respective fields.
Hannatu Dauda Simon Esq., Founder and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the HANS Centre, outlined the objectives of the program, which include increasing the number of young women pursuing professional courses, enhancing economic independence, and creating a network of mentors and mentees for long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, Hannatu shared her motivation for the project, highlighting her years of experience as a lawyer dealing with cases of gender-based violence, often linked to women’s lack of education and awareness of their rights.
She explained that the mentorship program is designed to empower vulnerable and marginalized women, helping them pursue meaningful careers and contribute to their communities.
“We want these girls not only to go to school but to stay in school and choose courses that will benefit them and their communities,” she said. “We aim to raise women who can be productive alongside men and play an active role in society.”
The program includes one girl from each of Gombe State’s 114 political wards, with six additional girls selected by members of the board of trustees. Schools in Gombe metropolis also allocated slots, bringing the total number of participants to over 120 girls.
