The newly appointed Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, has inspected ongoing livestock projects at the Akerebiata abattoir in Ilorin East Local Government Area.
The inspection was part of her efforts to engage with stakeholders in the livestock sector and enhance the State’s infrastructure and resources for livestock farming.
During the visit, Mrs. Thomas also oversaw the distribution of goats to smallholder farmers as part of the first phase of a goats empowerment program.
The initiative, which benefits over 100 farmers, is aimed at improving the income and livelihoods of small-scale livestock farmers in the State.
The program was made possible through donations from key stakeholders in the livestock sector.
Speaking during the distribution event at the State Coordination Office of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) in Ilorin, Mrs. Thomas emphasized that the program is part of the State government’s broader strategy to grow the livestock sector.
She noted that the capacity-building training organized by the L-PRES Project has had a significant impact, especially in changing the mindset of youths towards wealth creation and employment opportunities.
She added that Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is committed to not only providing training but also ensuring that every individual achieves financial independence to improve their livelihood and the overall economic status of the State.
The Commissioner acknowledged the efforts of the “Agbeloba Omodara” Cluster Farming Group, whose members had shared the knowledge gained during the training with others in their communities.
She assured the beneficiaries of the government’s continued support in transforming the livestock sector.
Earlier, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, State Project Coordinator for L-PRES, revealed that the goats were donated by local individuals to support the group members in their livestock businesses.
He further highlighted the integration of crop farming with livestock farming as a cost-effective strategy to reduce feeding expenses and increase profits.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mallam Shuaib Ajibola, Chairman of the “Agbeloba Omodara” Cooperative Farming Group, expressed gratitude to the State government, the L-PRES project, and the donors for their support.
He assured them that the animals would be well cared for to achieve the intended goals.
In a related development, Mrs. Thomas also inspected key facilities at the Akerebiata abattoir, including a newly constructed 60-ton solar-powered cold storage unit for preserving livestock products, slaughter slabs, and water facilities. She was accompanied by members of the Kwara State Butchers Union, who gave her a tour of the market.
The inspection and empowerment program underscore the State government’s commitment to supporting livestock farmers and enhancing the infrastructure of the livestock sector in Kwara State.
