The Taraba State Police Command has addressed recent misinformation circulating on social media regarding allegations of extortion and undue harassment by officers from the Takum Division and State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
According to the statement, on December 12, 2024, a violent clash erupted between youths from the Gattati and Barkin-Lissa communities in Takum Local Government Area.
The dispute resulted in the destruction of various properties, including government and private buildings, and left several individuals injured. One of the victims was identified as Ikpeason Abaga, a deaf and mute man from Barkin-Lissa.
A case was reported at the Takum Police Station by Hon. Japheth Sanda, a councillor from Shibong Ward, accusing the Gattati community youths and elders of inciting public disturbance, damaging property, and causing harm.
In response, the police arrested several individuals involved in the violence. A peace committee, including local leaders, was formed to mediate between the two communities.
The mediation led to an agreement where the Gattati community would compensate Barkin-Lissa for the damage and injuries. A total of 1.2 million Naira was collected by Hon.
Sanda on behalf of Barkin-Lissa. However, Gattati community youths later accused the councillor and the police of extorting money from them under the pretense of covering the costs of repairs and medical bills.
The case was transferred to the SCID for further investigation, and it was found that the extortion claims were false.
The 1.2 million Naira was returned to the Gattati community, and the money was handed over to their representative, Barr. Achiever John Musa Esq. The police also refuted claims that 300,000 Naira was extorted by an officer, clarifying that the amount was part of the refunded money.
The Taraba State Police Commissioner urged the public to avoid spreading false information that could jeopardize the peace in the state. The police assured the people of their continued commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens’ lives and properties.
The Commissioner emphasized that the police are responsible for investigating all crimes thoroughly, and in this case, they have handled the situation with professionalism and fairness.
