The Nigerian Customs Service has seized petroleum products valued at over 37 million Naira in the Taraba border areas, following a successful operation by the Service’s Operation Whirlwind.
The Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, made the announcement during an operational visit to Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.
The operation led to the seizure of 34,470 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and a sophisticated special-purpose vehicle used for transporting the smuggled goods.
The move is part of ongoing efforts to curb the rising trend of petroleum smuggling along the border areas between Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon.
According to Adeniyi, the Customs Service has seen a significant surge in smuggling activities, particularly in the North East, including Taraba and Adamawa states.
In response, the Service is set to introduce a pilot program aimed at threat assessment and adaptive response planning to combat these illegal activities.
The Nigerian Customs has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards smuggling and emphasized the importance of intelligence-based operations to enhance security and border control.
