Ishaya Inuwa Durkwa, Executive Director of The International Organisation for Peace Building and Social Justice (PSJ), has called on Nigerians to shift their focus from the recent controversy surrounding school closures for Ramadan in northern states to more pressing educational and national issues.
Inuwa, in a statement issued on Wednesday, questioned why there was little outcry over the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s education system, such as dilapidated school infrastructure, outdated curriculums, and widespread examination malpractices.
He also highlighted concerns like the exploitation of students by teachers and lecturers, including demands for sexual favors and financial payments in exchange for grades.
The PSJ director pointed out that while the public expressed outrage over the closure of schools for Ramadan, similar attention was not given to the deteriorating state of the country’s public schools or the disruption of academic calendars due to strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“Where was this same outrage when public schools were in shambles, with leaking roofs, broken desks, and overcrowded classrooms? Where were they when our curriculums failed to evolve, producing graduates unable to compete in a modern economy?” Durkwa asked.
Durkwa also speculated that the controversy surrounding school closures might not be about education, but rather concerns over religious and political power dynamics.
He suggested that fears of one religion asserting dominance over the other could be fueling the public outcry.
“The real anger over school closures isn’t about education at all. It’s about perception—fears of religious superiority and marginalization,” he said.
He further criticized Nigeria’s political elite, corrupt officials, and wealthy individuals who send their children to foreign schools while neglecting the country’s educational infrastructure. He urged Nigerians to focus on fighting for a better economy, stable electricity, clean water, and good roads, while holding leaders accountable for their actions.
Durkwa concluded that Nigeria’s true problems lie in bad leadership, misplaced priorities, and a failure to unite for meaningful change. “Until we fix that, we will keep majoring in the minors—fighting the wrong battles while the real culprits laugh their way to the bank,” he stated.
