Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has promised to construct a new female hostel at the Gombe State University following the fire incident that destroyed one of the hostels.

The governor, who visited the institution on Monday to commiserate with students and staff, also donated N20m to support victims of the disaster.

Yahaya described the incident as disturbing, noting that although no life was lost, many students were left stranded after losing their belongings. He directed the Commissioners for Higher Education and Works to fast-track the construction of a modern female hostel and ordered the university to enhance fire-fighting facilities on campus.

The governor said the donation was to complement relief items earlier distributed by the State Emergency Management Agency, adding that part of the money would be given to the Students’ Representative Council for equitable distribution.

Registrar of the university, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto, thanked the governor for his intervention and assured him that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
