YCD endorses Dr. Joel Hashim as preferred candidate • Faults Tinubu’s Jos remarks, insists only Northern Christian understands the realities on ground

The National Coordinator of the Young Christian Democrats (YCD), Mr. Ezekiel Dinfa, has argued that only a Northern Christian President possesses the capacity to genuinely safeguard Christians and other minority groups in the region from the rising tide of religious extremism and terrorism.
Dinfa, in a statement issued in Jos, Plateau State, faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent appeal to Northern Christians to support his administration on the strength of his respect for religious freedom, citing his wife’s role as a pastor. He maintained that the President’s remarks did not reflect the realities of Northern Christians who, he said, face existential threats daily.
“This is not the time for that kind of statement. Even Southern Christians do not understand what we are going through. Only a Northern Christian does,” Dinfa stressed.
The YCD coordinator disclosed that the group has endorsed Dr. Joel Gbenga Hashim, a Northern Christian and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the right candidate to lead the country in the future. He described Hashim as a successful entrepreneur with a sound grasp of national security and economics, who embodies fairness and inclusivity.
According to Dinfa, Hashim’s mixed heritage and Muslim roots position him as a bridge-builder capable of fostering unity across the country. He likened him to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who reunited Nigeria after the civil war.
