A coalition of lawyers in private practice has hailed the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the Chairman-designate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as one of the most credible appointments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group, under the aegis of the Coalition of Lawyers in Private Practice (CLPP), said the nomination of Amupitan reflects the administration’s commitment to merit and transparency in public appointments.
Convener of the coalition, Dr. Rambi Ibrahim Ayala (Esq.), in a statement on Saturday, urged the Senate to speed up the confirmation process to enable Amupitan assume duty and begin preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ayala said the Senior Advocate of Nigeria has the capacity, integrity, and experience to reposition INEC for credible and transparent elections.
“As a renowned academic and legal expert, Prof. Amupitan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will strengthen the operations of INEC,” the statement read.
He added that the coalition, which has over 20,000 members nationwide, fully supports the appointment, describing it as a step in the right direction.
“With the 2027 polls approaching, Nigeria needs a strong and independent electoral commission. We therefore urge the Senate to expedite his confirmation so he can hit the ground running,” the group added.

Amupitan’s nomination, announced last week and endorsed by the Council of State, has generated mixed reactions, but the coalition insisted that his record of excellence and integrity makes him the right choice for the job.
Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) is a distinguished scholar of law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos. He has authored several works on constitutional and electoral law and has served as a consultant to various public institutions on governance and legal reforms.
