Doha, Qatar — Nigeria has made its global debut in the defence industry with the unveiling of DICON-D7G, a fully indigenous defence platform, at the ongoing Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2026).
The exhibition, which runs until January 23, is one of the world’s leading maritime and naval defence events, attracting policymakers, military officials, and defence technology companies from across the globe.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, formally inaugurated Nigeria’s DICON-D7G exhibition booth, describing the platform as a demonstration of the country’s growing defence manufacturing capacity and technological expertise. He said Nigeria’s participation reflects its commitment to maritime security and industrial development.
For the first time since the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) was established in 1968, Nigeria is showcasing a platform designed for production, assembly, maintenance, storage, and export of military equipment. Officials said the initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on imported defence systems.
Mr Osman Chennar, CEO of DICON-D7G, said the platform is the result of years of strategic reforms, public-private partnerships, and policy alignment. “DICON-D7G delivers end-to-end defence solutions, including weapons production, systems integration, logistics, warehousing, and export readiness,” he said.
Retired Major General Mainasara Abdul Masanawa, Director of Land Systems at DICON, described DIMDEX 2026 as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s capabilities and engage global defence partners. He said the platform is exploring technology transfers, joint ventures, and export opportunities in Africa, the Middle East, and other emerging markets.
Industry analysts said Nigeria’s debut signals the Federal Government’s intent to reposition DICON as a competitive player in the global defence industry. Retired Brigadier General Abiodun Morakinyo said it aligns with national goals of job creation, technological innovation, and enhancing the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.
Beyond the exhibition, the Nigerian delegation is holding discussions on strategic partnerships, maritime security cooperation, and defence export opportunities. Observers said the DICON-D7G launch positions Nigeria to compete for contracts in African and Middle Eastern defence markets.
Officials said Nigeria’s participation highlights its focus on indigenous innovation, human capacity development, and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. Analysts expect the debut to attract global attention and strengthen Nigeria’s strategic standing in international defence and security
