The Chairman of Flow FM Radio Station, Ilorin, Engineer Olufemi Sanni, has urged media practitioners and Nigerians to exercise restraint as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, stressing that Nigeria remains a common heritage that must be preserved.
Sanni called on journalists to uphold professionalism by ensuring balanced reportage and responsible storytelling that calms public nerves rather than inflames tensions. He made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, during a courtesy visit to the station.
According to him, the media plays a strategic role in shaping public perception and must guide political narratives in the interest of national unity and peace. “Our job is to make sure we balance our stories. We should be able to control the narrative and ensure the country stays together,” Sanni said.
He warned that as 2027 approaches, personal or institutional biases should not drive reportage that could escalate tension. “Regardless of where we stand, we must not promote narratives that will heighten conflict. Instead, we should create stories that calm nerves and promote peace,” he added.
Sanni also stressed the importance of collective responsibility in mentoring the younger generation, noting that proper guidance and collaboration among stakeholders would help secure a more peaceful future for the nation.
On Flow FM’s programming, he disclosed that the decision to operate the first all-English radio station in Kwara State was deliberate, explaining that it has boosted the station’s relevance and reach. “When we started, the station was ranked 16th, but today Flow FM is number four. It is important to move with the tide if we want a secured future,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mallam ‘Biola Azeez, said the visit aimed to strengthen cordial relations, promote peace and explore opportunities for future collaboration between the chapel and the radio station.
