The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, describing it as a reaffirmation of the supremacy of political parties in the management of their internal affairs.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Felix Choji, the PDP said the ruling represents a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
Choji said the party received the judgment with satisfaction, noting that the court affirmed that the dispute before it bordered strictly on internal party leadership positions, which are within the exclusive preserve of political parties.
The party specifically hailed the judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed G. Umar in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2025, which arose from a protracted legal dispute involving Senator Samuel Anyanwu over his claim to the office of National Secretary of the PDP.
The judgment, delivered on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, dismissed the suit and upheld the party’s constitutional powers to regulate its internal leadership structure and discipline its members in line with its constitution.
According to the PDP, the court reaffirmed the long-standing position of Nigerian courts, including the Supreme Court, that issues bordering on the internal leadership and administration of political parties are generally non-justiciable, adding that the suit amounted to an abuse of court process due to the existence of multiple parallel cases.
The court further found that Senator Anyanwu, who was elected National Secretary in 2021, could not lawfully remain in office beyond the tenure for which he was elected.
The Plateau PDP said the ruling reinforces the authority of the party’s constitution as the binding guide for all members and officials, adding that all actions taken in respect of the matter complied with relevant provisions of the PDP constitution and the Electoral Act.
Reacting to the judgment, a party leader, Raymond Dabo, urged PDP members and supporters to disregard contrary claims, stating that the National Working Committee led by Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, elected at the Ibadan National Convention in November 2025, remains united and committed to strengthening democracy and winning future elections.
