NUJ Chairman Receives Traditional Wakilin Sadarwa Title in Gombe

The Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, has conferred the traditional title of Wakilin Sadarwa on the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, Alhaji Farouk Mu’azu Gombe.

The title was conferred on Sunday by the Shamaki of Gombe, Alhaji Usman Mohammad, who represented the Emir at the ceremony held at Mu’azu’s family residence. He led a seven-member delegation from the Gombe Emirate Council to formally announce the decision.

The Wakilin Sadarwa is regarded as the mouthpiece of the Emirate, with responsibilities that include communication, representation and fostering engagement between the traditional institution and the public.

Speaking on behalf of the Emir, the Shamaki said the honour was in recognition of Mu’azu’s contributions to the Emirate and Gombe State, particularly through journalism and public service. He urged him to uphold honesty, promote community service, respect elders and mentor younger people.

He added that the Emir may call on Mu’azu to represent the Emirate at official functions or accompany him on important engagements, stressing the need for dedication and readiness.

The event was attended by journalists, government officials including commissioners, as well as friends and associates, who described the recognition as well deserved. They urged the NUJ chairman to sustain professionalism in journalism and promote peace and unity in the state.

Mu’azu has more than two decades of experience in journalism and public communication. He has served at the Gombe Media Corporation, Gombe State Government House and as Director of Information at the Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue.

He also worked as Information Officer for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in Gombe State and has held advisory roles with organisations including Amnesty International and the MacArthur Foundation.
